PURPOSE Determination of the intrahepatic distribution volume of two contrast media (CM) by CT-guided application in an ex-vivo and an in-vivo model (pig liver). MATERIAL AND METHODS In pig livers ex-vivo and in-vivo, 131 CT-guided injections of two different CM (Imagopaque(R), Visipaque(R)) were performed using catheters and cannula with and without side-holes and documented by spiral CT. The distribution pattern was assessed visually: interstitial, subcapsular, vascular/tubular, the distribution volume was quantified using a density mask (thresholds 70/400 HE). Abstract We aimed to assess the thermal profile and size of iceballs produced by Accuprobe cryoprobes in fresh porcine and human liver and human colorectal cancer liver metastases in vitro to allow better planning of cryosurgical treatment of liver metastases. Iceballs were produced by a 20-min single freeze cycle using 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver in a waterbath at 37°C ( n = 8) and 3-mm cryoprobes in pig liver ( n = 8), human liver ( n = 3), and human colorectal cancer liver metastases ( n = 8). Abstract The enzymatic hydrolysis of racemic cocaine and cocaine analogues using pig liver esterase (PLE) is shown to afford a practical means for achieving their chemical resolution. This reaction was found to proceed not only with good enantioselectivity, but with an interesting chemoselectivity as well.

Abstract Pig liver esterase (PLE) afforded smooth chemical resolution of racemic N -substituted 4-(benzoyloxy)-3-carbomethoxypiperidines. The enzyme showed good chemo- and enantioselective properties, thus allowing discrimination between the carbomethoxy and benzoate ester groups, the latter being more easily hydrolyzed. The proposed methodology also represents a practical means for the procurement of N -substituted 4-hydroxy-3-carbomethoxypiperidines in enantiomerically pure form.
